This International Women’s Day, we continue our legacy of championing women who have shaped our past, supporting women today to push the boundaries of possibility and helping the next generation create a more equitable and inclusive world.
We are proud to provide ongoing support to both the National Literacy Trust and The Prince’s Trust Women Supporting Women initiatives. Building on our work to help youth gain literacy skills in November 2021, our donation to NLT will provide a bespoke pack of 12 books from their International Women’s Day booklist and other resources to students within the same 10 schools participating in that initiative. Through this donation, we want to encourage young students to expand their literary horizons in their formative years and be inspired by diverse women’s stories. Additionally, our funding to The Prince’s Trust will continue to provide vital tools and support to help young women gain access to opportunities across employment, entrepreneurship, education and training.
While we have taken strides towards gender equality across our business, we know there is more to do within our organisation and across the industry.
Alongside our global Diversity and Inclusion strategy, we are committing to a new ambition: becoming the best place to work for women in our industry.
Some of our latest actions underpinning our goals include:
Erica Bourne, Chief People Officer, Burberry: “Women make up the majority of our workforce and contribute substantially to the luxury fashion industry as a whole. To become the best place to work for women, we must continue pushing for gender equality. While we have made significant progress with initiatives we’ve supported within Burberry and beyond, there’s still much more to accomplish to eradicate the barriers and biases preventing women from realising their potential. Through our ambition and steps we are taking to achieve our goals, we hope to drive greater progress, active allyship and real change throughout our industry.”
Fay Lant, Head of School Programmes at the National Literacy Trust: “We are delighted to be working with Burberry to further our aim of inspiring girls through literacy and learning. Thanks to Burberry’s support, we are proud to be providing a bespoke pack of 12 books from our International Women’s Day booklist to all schools participating in the Marcus Rashford Book Club school library project, including the titles Girls Can Do Anything by Caryl Hart and Little Leaders: Visionary Women Around the World by Vashti Harrison. We are confident these books and the additional resources will help young girls feel supported and enthusiastic about their futures.”
Frances Milner, Director of Fundraising, The Prince’s Trust: “The Prince’s Trust is committed to supporting more young women to develop the confidence and skills they need to build a brighter future and we’re incredibly grateful to Burberry for joining us in support of this cause. Sadly, we know that many young women in the UK are more likely to feel as though they are going to fail or that the pandemic has caused a lasting impact on their self-worth. If we don’t act now, there is a risk that they will lose hope for the future and never fully realise their potential. Through our #ChangeAGirlsLife campaign for International Women’s Day, Burberry is joining more than 80 brands to raise vital funds for the Trust that will help young women to transform their lives through education, training and employment, or through starting their own businesses. Together, we can continue to make a tangible difference to the lives of those young women who need us most.”
